I had the opportunity to create visuals for a DJ event at Porsche Studio in Portland Oregon
as part of their Shifting Realities Art Show. In New York, I prepared three sets of visuals for the DJs
using TouchDesigner: a neon light inspired set to start out the night, an Egypt meets Portland landscape
scene for Motaz, and an abstract carpentry inspired set for Chi Duly.
Each of these sets react to
the audio, creating a real-time rendered immersive environment. I also incorporated depth camera visuals to
create a live 3D representation of the DJ that distorted in time with the music. Additionally, I programmed
a MIDI controller to modify different aspects of each scene to allow for variation and art direction in each
performance.
I used
the dimensions of the space to create a pre-visualization, which previewed how the projections would look at
Porsche Studios from New York.
Once at the venue, the first thing I worked on was connecting my
TouchDesigner visuals to the Pixera media server where the 11 projectors are mapped to the space. I used NDI
to bridge the two programs. Motaz brought his DJ deck in and we connected it into the mixer, then sent a
copy of the audio to the Server running TouchDesigner. We set up the Depth Camera and processed it on a
laptop near the booth before sending the signal over Ethernet to the server.
